Periphone Privacy Policy
Effective date: 8 October 2026 Developer: Guruswarupa Contact: work.guruswarupa@gmail.com
Periphone lends your Android phone's hardware to your own computer: its camera, its microphone and its sound output (for example Bluetooth earbuds). This policy explains what the Periphone Android app and the Periphone desktop app (Windows, macOS and Linux) do with your information.
The short version
- Periphone has no accounts, no ads, no analytics, no tracking and no servers. The developer receives no data from you.
- Your video, your phone's microphone sound and your computer's sound travel only between your phone and your own computer, over a USB cable or your local Wi-Fi network.
- The microphone is off until you switch on "Share microphone" in the app and allow the permission. The camera is used only while you share it. "Play computer sound" is a separate switch, off until you turn it on.
- Nothing is recorded or stored by Periphone unless you ask the desktop app to save it.
What Periphone accesses on your phone, and why
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Camera | To capture the video that is sent to your computer. Only when "Share camera" is on and a computer is streaming; it can be switched off completely. |
| Microphone | Only if you switch on "Share microphone": to send your phone's sound to your computer. |
| Network, Wi-Fi state, multicast (internet permission) | To connect to your computer on your local network or through the USB cable, and to let your computer find the phone. Periphone does not contact any internet server. |
| Foreground service (camera, microphone, media playback), notifications | To keep streaming while the screen is off, to keep playing your computer's sound, and to show a notification while the camera, the microphone or the sound is in use. |
| Wake lock | To keep the connection alive while streaming. |
Where your data goes
- Video and microphone audio are sent directly to the computer you paired with the phone. They are not sent to the developer or to any third party, and they are not stored on the phone.
- Your computer's sound, when you choose to send it, goes directly from the computer to the phone, which plays it (for example through Bluetooth earbuds). It is not sent anywhere else and not stored. Muting the computer's own speakers while it is sent is optional and is undone when you stop.
- The stream is not encrypted. Pairing makes sure only a computer you approved (you tap Connect on both devices the first time) can connect, but the video and sound themselves travel unencrypted. Use a USB cable or a network you trust.
- The desktop app plays the sound and shows the picture on your computer. It saves a recording only if you explicitly use a recording option (for example
--audio-wav).
What is stored on your devices
On the phone: a random device identifier and the phone's name, the list of computers you have paired with (and a secret pairing token for each), your chosen settings (camera, size, frame rate, whether the microphone is shared), and a list of camera modes that did not work on your phone. This stays on the phone. You can remove paired computers with "Forget paired computers" in the app; uninstalling the app deletes everything.
On the computer: the phones you added (names, addresses), their settings, and the pairing tokens, in your user profile folder. Uninstalling Periphone or deleting that folder removes them.
Periphone writes technical log messages to your own device for troubleshooting. They never contain video, audio, pairing codes or secrets, and they are not sent anywhere.
Sharing
Periphone does not sell, share or transfer your information to anyone. Third-party components used in the apps (such as FFmpeg and SDL2 on the computer) run locally and do not send data anywhere.
Children
Periphone is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children under 13. It does not knowingly collect any information from anyone.
Your choices
You can turn the microphone off at any time, revoke the camera or microphone permission in Android settings, forget paired computers, or uninstall the app. Because the developer holds none of your data, there is nothing to request from the developer.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new effective date.
